The Film: At age 28, stand-up comic Woody Allen was hired to write and appear in What's New Pussycat?, a film that succeeds despite itself. Great ideas and gags tend to be executed in a rather half-arsed fashion, from the very first scene to the film's eventual conclusion. However, despite negative reviews, What's New Pussycat? was a massive success upon its 1965 release, prompting Allen to comment, "If they'd let me make it, I would have made it twice as funny and half as successful". Originally devised as a vehicle for Warren Beatty - the title is the greeting with which he would answer the phone - the story involves journalist and serial philanderer Michael Jones's inability to settle down. Peter O'Toole ultimately ended up with the lead role, while his psychiatrist and fellow sexaholic, Dr. Fritz Fassbinder, is played by Peter Sellers.
