Madman/The AV Channel. On shelves December 3.
Quirky and original, this Welsh comedy/drama/musical hinges on your acceptance of Rachel Griffiths' character and performance. She plays the titular slightly retarded young woman living in a small country town in the shadow of her mean father (Jonathan Pryce). When Mary finally gains independence from the old man, will she be able to find her own voice? Filled with characters that wouldn't be out of place in a quirky Aussie comedy (the gay couple, the sleazy priest, the foul-mouthed, boozed-up white trash mothers and their young pregnant daughters), Very Annie Mary is mostly entertaining and engaging (the ending comes too suddenly and ties up loose ends without explaining them), but its appreciation is largely limited to whether you go with Griffo - part child/part retard/part sexually voracious 30-something - or not.
