The Film > Similar to the original, the off-screen drama created as much of the hype as the film itself, this time with the firing of director Paul Schrader (after he failed to deliver the gory film the studios wanted), and his subsequent replacement with director Renny Harlin (The Long Kiss Goodnight) who re-shot 90% of the film. However, what is different to the original is that this prequel sucks, with none of the creepy verve that abounded in the original. Rather, Stellan Skarsgard - in his portrayal of a younger Father Merrin (played by Max Von Sydow in the original) and his initial demonic battles - bumbles helplessly through a bad script and various nonsensical plot developments, yet manages to give the best performance in what is a rather lacklustre cast, which isn't really saying much. The Exorcist: The Beginning is boring, unoriginal, and comes complete with some very bad digital effects. Let's hope the studio eventually allows Schrader to release his own cut"¦
