The Mad Max series has a lot to answer for. How many lesser movies have followed in its wake? How many times will we be forced to view a cinematic rendering of the dismal future of humankind, with its proliferation of grubby urchins, their strange prayers, post-apocalyptic landscape and tattered monochrome costuming and decor?
In the year 2020 somewhere outside of London, a handful of humans are hanging on for grim death in the aftermath of global destruction due to the inadvertent awakening of fire-breathing dragons. Christian Bale stars as Quinn, the band's official leader who has to prove his mettle when a bunch of swaggering Yanks, led by Van Zan (a cigar chomping and scenery chewing Matthew McConaughey), march into their camp. With the help of his gorgeous helicopter pilot Alex (Izabella Scorupco), Van Zan is all for fighting the dragons mid-air, with his seemingly expendable crew of kamikaze skydivers.
This makes for some exciting footage, but the endless macho, gravel-voiced showdowns between the two leading men gets tiresome after a while. Still, the dragon CGI work is fairly impressive and while the final solution seems a little too easy, it's still fairly fun to watch.
