"...an unlikely, but completely essential film..."

Since its discovery nearly twenty years ago, the Chauvet Caves in the south of France and their 32,000 year old cave paintings have fascinated everyone from art historians and anthropologists to archaeologists and palaeontologists. Frozen in time, the caves offer an insight into the daily lives and experiences of our ancient ancestors, which has so far remained unknown. For the first time since the discovery of the caves a film has been allowed to document the sprawling underground network of subterranean chambers.
Written, directed and narrated by Werner Herzog, Cave Of Forgotten Dreams is a genuinely magical cinematic experience. Limited by time and only able to take a small amount of basic lighting and camera equipment, Herzog crafts a truly remarkable movie that documents man's earliest recorded foray into trying to capture the world around him. In keeping the talking head interviews to a minimum, but just enough to give the film a depth of context, Herzog focuses on the stunning ancient images that are the origins of all our artistic endeavours.
An absolutely stunning feature, Cave Of Forgotten Dreams is an unlikely, but completely essential film that really must be seen to be believed.
