Not quite a rom-com, this film is better situated as a drama, and even then it struggles. Will (Tom Sturridge), a street performer with no aspirations heads back to his home town when he learns his childhood first and only love, Emma (Rachel Bilson), is returning to visit her dying father. The only problem is, he hasn't spoken to her since he was nine and every time he tries to, he tends to start hyperventilating. As they finally re-unite, their own set of issues start to overcome their lives, pulling them apart once more.
Sturridge is great with a loveable and quirky character, whereas Bilson gets a character that is two dimensional. But, even so, the film is sweet. It has great moments with the free-spirited Will confronted with his brothers' pragmatic view of the world, both learning to understand each other. But these moments (and even another side plot of a framed murder) detract from what is supposed to be the main plot, the love story. The film falters, with too many stories to follow all at once that at the end, it all feels glossed over.
