FILMINK rates DVDs and Blu-rays out of 5A dance documentary that's exciting, revealing and emotionally compelling.

Turn It Loose follows six breakdancers from around the globe, battling in the "BC One" world championships. The film documents the boys' acceptance into the competition, their home life, and their one-on-one battles, and focuses on what breakdancing means to them. A young boy from the ghetto of Senegal; a French-Algerian who refuses to return his 2006 winning belt; an American who lost his brother and is doing it in his honour - all brilliant stories, all meshing to form an overarching tale about dedication, direction and dreamers.
Though it occasionally drags, Turn It Loose will mostly have the viewer teetering on the edge of their seat, enthralled by the action, and emotionally invested in all the competitors. The dance sequences are edited brilliantly, emphasising the great skill and talent that these dancers possess. Turn It Loose gives depth to the world of breakdancing and its characters, more than any Hollywood franchise ever could, because it digs at the foundation of the craft. The film proves that breakdancing isn't just about a bunch of tricks - it's a culture that gives people meaning. It's the dancers' emotions translated through movement that speaks across language barriers and circumstances. The DVD features bonus interviews and extended footage.
