"Tomboys isn’t the next Wolf Creek..."

Australia doesn't exactly have a thriving independent horror scene so when one comes along, as a genre fan, you really want it to be good. Tomboys isn't the next Wolf Creek but it does have its moments.

Following in the tradition of ‘woman-takes-revenge' movies like I Spit on Your Grave, Tomboys opens with a group of women chaining up the man who brutally raped them. What they do to him will have most male viewers squirming and that's before the opening credits. Things were looking good.

[SPOILER ALERT] Sadly an insanely preposterous "twist" occurs. You see, somehow these women picked up the wrong man and castrated him without even checking under the bag on his head.

This glaringly stupid moment could have been saved if maybe one of the women had gone crazy and was punishing any or all men but no, we're meant to believe the rape victim doesn't see the difference between "purple and blue".

Then the second act occurs, with a lot of heavy-handed dialogue delivered fairly poorly. Finally the real rapist is found and then the torture begins anew... although it's hard to feel any sympathy or even empathy for a group of people who just killed an innocent man because they didn't double check the bloody sack on his head.

Ultimately things end predictably, which is a pity, as there are a few moments where things were looking good. Ultimately, however, Tomboys is a one note idea that never matches the intensity of the opening.
