DVD reviews
Youth In Revolt
While ocasionally a little too clever for its own good, this witty and ambitious comedy comes out on top.
Visioneers
A peculiarly compelling little film which admirably demonstrates restraint and well-paced comedic timing.
Beneath Hill 60
Devoid of overblown heroism and boosted by fine performances, this is a powerfully affecting war tale.
A Prophet
This sprawling ultra-realistic prison drama is a near-masterpiece and further complemented by a clutch of impressive special features.
The Rage In Placid Lake (DVD)
Year:
The Disc: 4.0
20th Century Fox Home Entertainment. Out January 14.
Unfairly slighted by some on release earlier this year, this is actually one of the most refreshing Aussie comedies in a while. From its wonderfully misleading horror-style title to its slightly surreal look, the film carefully nurtures its oddball credentials. Aussie pop-rock star Ben Lee is a suitably unlikely-looking hero as the eponymous Placid Lake and Rose Byrne is a bluestocking straight girl to die for. On top of that., Gary "Norman Gunston" McDonald and Brit import Miranda Richardson almost steal the whole show as Placid's selfish hippy parents who put their pretentious self-actualising above being real with their kid.
