FILMINK rates DVDs and Blu-rays out of 5“...twisted and paints a scary picture of modern American youth.”

Most people face financial difficulties at some stage in their lives. What most people don't do, is kidnap three rich kids and hold them for ransom. Paul (Kevin Zegers from Gossip Girl and Transamerica) sees his mum suffering and isn't able to help because they can't afford the medication. His plan is well researched, well thought out and nearly full proof. He befriends two college students to help with his plan and everything goes well until one hostage is killed and another two escape.
The film is twisted and paints a scary picture of modern American youth. The three wealthy kids live a life of partying and drugs, without much else to worry about. Paul's two well-chosen accomplices are sadistic and suicidal. They are well chosen because with their mental health issues, Paul is able to lay the blame and suspicion directly on to them. Yet as Paul taunts the wealthy kids' fathers (played brilliantly by familiar faces including Ray Liotta, Victor Garber and Stephen McHattie) into paying the ransom, you see how mentally ill-prepared Paul is.
Zegers really puts forward an amazing performance. There is a constant underlying determined malevolence. And even though he is the cause for a number of unnecessary deaths, you can't help but be on his side.
Special features include an alternate ending and a behind the scenes featurette.
