“...a little trite.”

The portentous voice which introduces this 1977 suspense trilogy informs us that the "Dead of Night is a state of mind," unrelated to any actual time of day. The first two stories seeking to demonstrate this state of mind are the most successful, if a little trite. Second Chance, where a young Ed Begley Jr restores a mysterious old car, is pleasantly whimsical, while No Such Thing As a Vampire is well-constructed, with a sharp sting in its tale. Bobby, the third in the series, has a mother (Joan Hackett) wishing for the return of her dead son (Lee Montgomery). Though hammily acted and scripted, Bobby is of interest as an elaboration of W.W. Jacobs' short story The Monkey's Paw, as well as paralleling Stephen King's much more sophisticated Pet Sematary, published in 1983.
