FILMINK rates DVDs and Blu-rays out of 5“...strikes a perfect balance between the traditional and the modern.”

Classic animated features from the Walt Disney Studios have a magic all of their own. In recent times, the animation genre in Hollywood has regressed slightly, due to an over reliance on computer generated imagery and an excess of self-referential humour. This makes Tangled a welcome return to classic Disney animation in every sense of the word.
The plot is broadly faithful to its source - the fairy tale Rapunzel. Princess Rapunzel (Mandy Moore), whose hair is endowed with both length and magical powers is kidnapped at birth by an evil witch (Donna Murphy), and confined to an isolated tower for the first eighteen years of her life, until the fateful day when she crosses paths with dashing thief Flynn Rider (Zachary Levi).
There are two respects in which Tangled strikes a perfect balance between the traditional and the modern. Firstly, the only anachronisms are doses of modern jargon that are sparingly injected to spice up the verbal humour. Secondly, the film achieves a perfect hybrid of hand drawn animation, enhanced only where necessary by computer-generated effects. Also, Tangled is a prime example of the importance of the voice cast in animated films - Moore and Levi bring their characters to life with sensitivity and understatement, and perform Alan Menken's musical numbers more than adequately.
In summary, Tangled is a fabulous return to form for Disney animation.
