Following Genndy Tartakovsky’s excellent animated series of the same name, The Clone Wars is set prior to Anakin Skywalker’s transformation into the black-clad Darth Vader in Revenge Of The Sith. The challenge for the creators of The Clone Wars therefore is to tell stories that are at once original, as well as familiar to fans. Fortunately, they succeeded. While characters like Anakin’s (Matt Lanter) padawan apprentice, Ahsoka (Ashley Eckstein), seem designed to appeal to a younger audience, the storylines themselves are surprisingly adult. The show deals with the politics of the conflict between the Republic and the Separatist forces far more coherently than the films themselves. Tom Kane’s narration calls to mind adventure serials such as Buck Rogers and Flash Gordon, which inspired Lucas in the first place. Then there is the stand out episode “Altar Of Morbis”, which offers up something entirely new: a triumvirate of Force entities that represent the different aspects of the spiritual energy worshipped by the Jedi. The conflict that breaks out between them can be seen as a foreshadowing of Anakin’s fall (who claims, “I will never join The Dark Side willingly”). This is a worthwhile addition to the Star Wars canon.
