New York journalist Katie Connors (Jane Greer) travels to Mexico on the pretence of tracking down an author whom she greatly admires, Mike Latimer (Richard Widmark), whose career has gone the way of J. D. Salinger. On the return journey, the pair is fortunate to be rescued when Mike's plane crashes in remote jungle, but they soon discover that their rescuers, led by Browne (Trevor Howard), aren't who they claim to be.
Run For The Sun is a clear precursor to the likes of the Indiana Jones series and Romancing The Stone. Unfortunately, the adventure scenes are less engaging than the dramatic ones, and the delivery in general is less interesting than the setup. The film is not to be taken seriously for a moment, but one wishes that the cast and filmmakers had more fully embraced the preposterousness of the premise, as much of the comic potential here has remain untapped.
As far as performances are concerned, Widmark, who bears more than just a physical resemblance to Steve McQueen, impresses more than Greer, who plays things a little too straight. Overall, Run For The Sun simply isn't as much fun as it should have been.
