FILMINK rates DVDs and Blu-rays out of 5...overall, its a charming film, embellished with poignant moments and hilarious situations...

Adapted from the beloved children's book series by Beverly Cleary, Ramona And Beezus follows precocious nine-year old Ramona Quimby, whose red gumboots and larger-than-life imagination lead to serious misadventures. Interspersed with colourful animations, the film unveils an adult's world through Ramona's innocent eyes - redundancies, death, love, rivalries, friendships and families - and the plots she concocts to fix the problems in her life.
There's nothing quite like a child's imagination, which Ramona And Beezus captures with utmost sincerity and vibrancy. The film is a refreshing and breezy depiction of a complicated world, showing simple truths from an innocent gaze, but without sacrificing the depth of their consequences. Furthermore, the film depicts a positive environment for a child, with loving, attentive parents and relatives who provide - even in times of turmoil - everything for their family. Though at times whimsical, it's still a welcome approach.
The story is bolstered by the charismatic performances of the entire cast, particularly Joey King as the effervescent Ramona. Bursting at the seams with energy, but playing her character with restraint, King steals the show. Her chemistry with John Corbett, who plays her father is particularly striking, as is her ability to shift from uninhibited joy to subdued sadness with incredible ease.
Though at times the story and scenarios are scattered, flitting carelessly from love stories to family dramas, overall, it's a charming film, embellished with poignant moments and hilarious situations.
The DVD features deleted scenes, a gag reel, interview with the author and a sweet DIY segment for kids to make their own movie.
