Nick (Michael Cera) is refusing to accept his break-up with Tris (Alexis Dziena), and has been bombarding her with sentimental mix tapes. Tris' classmate, Norah (Kat Dennings), has been rescuing the tapes almost as quickly as Tris bins them, and has taken a shine to the musical intellect of the unseen Nick. Out that night playing in his band The Jerkoffs, Nick has a meet-cute with Norah when, in an attempt to stand up against Tris' bitchy taunts, she asks him to pretend to be her boyfriend. Their budding romance is hampered by a series of comic circumstances. They also need to shake off the now-jealous Tris and find Norah's lost friend, Caroline (Ari Graynor), who, impossibly drunk and mistakenly thinking she's been kidnapped, provides the best moments of the film.
Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist has a genuine warmth and charm, and draws inevitable comparisons to Juno. Cera plays much the same character - sensitive and understated - and there are the same stylistic features, such as animated opening credits and too-cool-for-school teen banter. There are a lot of impressive elements but, just like a playlist, you could shuffle the scenes out of order without losing much effect. In lacking a gripping narrative, it ultimately leaves you unsatisfied.
