Laid To Rest spends little time establishing characters or plot. A young woman (Bobbi Sue Luther) wakes up in a coffin, with no idea how she got there. Moments later, she witnesses a brutal slaying and is running for her life. In these opening few minutes, the film's formula is succinctly conveyed. The killer, named "Chrome Skull" (Nick Principe), doggedly pursues "the girl" (credited as such because she cannot remember her name), inventively carving open anyone who gets in his way and making home movies of his slayings, which he meticulously categorises. He even has personalised number plates, to show that he's committed to his persona. Despite its adherence to genre cliches, the film possesses a sly sense of humour and delivers plenty of gore, via impressive "traditional" effects. Viewers seeking generous servings of viscera could do a lot worse.
