After an impressive third season, which saw the Heroes franchise rebooted due to the 2007-08 writers strike, the ambitious multi-story series returns for its swansong after declining ratings and high production costs sealed its fate with the network.

Following on from the conspiracies, persecutions and cliffhangers, Season Four introduces an array of new characters, each with their own unique ability, and most of whom belong to a travelling carnival under the control of Samuel Sullivan (a compelling performance from Prison Break's Robert Knepper), an emotionally damaged "special" whose ability allows him to move the earth, literally and violently. When Samuel offers safe haven to anyone who possesses abilities, he draws the attention of series regulars, including Claire Bennet (Hayden Panettiere), time traveler Hiro Nakamura (Masi Oka), and the brilliantly malevolent Sylar (Zachary Quinto).

Heroes has continually raised the bar when it comes to television production values, and Season Four is no exception. While the five-disc DVD release boasts a humble collection of deleted and extended scenes, the commentaries and interviews with cast and crew offer the most value to fans, notably an address from creator Tim Kring on the show's demise and his promise to keep the Heroes universe alive.
