Getting old can be alarming, on a number of levels. In particular, films once considered classic can change contextually. Such is the case with John Hughes' Ferris Bueller's Day Off, which made Matthew Broderick a household name and shoved phrases like, "Bueller... Bueller?" and "Save Ferris!" deep into the pop cultural lexicon. For most people who grew up in the eighties, Ferris Bueller's Day Off will always hold a fond place in their hearts. The cheeky direction, the breaking of the fourth wall, and the fantastic soundtrack pretty much make this a must-see. The character of Ferris Bueller himself, however, is a victim of the eighties America "Yay!" culture. Imagine an inverted Napoleon Dynamite - a smug, grinning character for whom life is a breeze. He's manipulative, glib and cynical; if you actually sit down and think about the kind of guy that Bueller is...well, you could imagine him running a massive corporation into the ground and skipping out with a huge sack of cash, leaving investors living on the street. Entropy aside, this is a fantastic edition of the film. There's a sweet print of the film, making-of docos, cast reunions, and a bunch of other cute - if not groundbreaking - extras. For those of us who grew up with it, nostalgia wins the day, and for anyone younger...well, see what wonderfully moronic optimists we were back then. Classic stuff, although Cameron, not Bueller, is the charmer these days...
