British filmmakers have made outstanding comedy-heist movies. From The Lavender Hill Mob to A Fish Called Wanda (both directed by Charles Crichton), they've produced many classics which successfully alternate thrills and laughs. Bullseye! is Michael Winner's (Death Wish) entry into the genre.
Two small-time crooks, Sidney Lipton (Michael Caine) and Garald Bradley-Smith (Roger Moore), former partners, now antagonists, are recruited by their former lover, Willie (Sally Kirkland, Valley of the Dolls) for their ultimate con. Sidney and Garald are the doppelgangers of Dr Hicklar (Caine) and Sir John Bavistock (Moore), who have uncovered a formula for an unlimited energy source. Willie wants her former partners to impersonate the scientists to steal the formula from their safe-deposit box. The con-men soon find themselves in hot water and on their way to Scotland. It seems that both the British Security Services and the CIA want to blackmail them into helping them catch Hicklar and Bavistock, who were intending to sell their formula to the highest bidder, instead of patriotically handing it over to them.
One word can sum up every aspect of this movie, the plot, the dialogue, the acting, the characters, the sets, the music, the comedy, the action, the mystery: lame. And the less said about it, the better.
