“…warm, friendly and heartfelt…”

It started with The Sullivans and has been continued with the Rafters - when it comes to television, it's clear that Australians like seeing themselves (or at least families similar to them) on the screen. And the fact that the ABC series Bed of Roses has made it to a third season highlights that point even further.

This show is not about sex, drugs and rock and roll. It's not glamourous, violent or abstract. It's about a divorced woman, Louisa Atherton (Kerry Armstrong) who leaves the city and moves back to her childhood home in the country to live with her mother Minna (Julia Blake) and her teenage daughter Holly (Hanna Mangan Lawrence).

The show in general has been about finding your feet after forty and this series sees Louisa well and truly shake off the problems of the past and take charge of her life. She's got a new job running the local paper, a new love, Nick (Jay Laga'aia) and she's really settling into her new life. But as always, life has a way of disrupting the best laid plans.

Bed of Roses is a warm, friendly and heartfelt show and Season Three is no exception. Armstrong is perfect as Louisa and proves that fun can happen after forty. In fact, all the actors bring both drama, comedy and overall normality to their roles which makes all the characters feel familiar. Plus the subject matter and focus of the series is refreshing and optimistic.

All in all, this is a sincere series that is easy to digest and each episode leaves you feeling good. Sometimes, that's all you can ask for.
