Amadeus is the tale of the young musical genius, Mozart (Tom Hulce), and his relationship with his egomaniacal rival, Antonio Salieri (F. Murray Abraham). Told through a series of flashbacks, Salieri confesses his sins to a priest, citing his apparent murder of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Salieri's tale is one of unbridled ego and pride, beginning when he meets the young Mozart and is instantly appalled at the brash and rude behaviour of the boy. Furthermore, Salieri is disgusted that God would endow the young upstart with such incredible musical abilities. As Salieri ages, he becomes embittered and resentful, obsessively plotting to destroy Mozart in any number of ways. Directed by veteran filmmaker Milos Forman (One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, The People Vs. Larry Flynt), Amadeus shows the filmmaker and his cast at the top of their respective games. Despite being a virtual facsimile of the recent 2002 Director's Cut DVD, this new Hi Def presentation of the film is a solid one. As well as the extra twenty minutes of footage in the film, there's a top-notch making-of documentary, as well as a fascinating feature commentary with Milos Forman and screenwriter Peter Shaffer discussing various aspects of the film's creation. The transfer is lush and richly detailed, showcasing the period design like never before, but it's the stunning Dolby 5.1 TrueHD soundtrack that really impresses.
