It often seems that the focus of glitzy movie award ceremonies is largely on the actors, actresses and directors while less recognition is given to those who work in other parts of the filmmaking process such as sound editing and design.

The non-profit organisation, Motion Picture Sound Editors (MPSE) attempts to rectify this. Established in 1953, the MPSE aims to educate the community about the artistic merit and technical advancement in sound and music editing.

Over the weekend, the MPSE held their annual Golden Reel Awards in Los Angeles, a ceremony which celebrates leading proponents in this field.

"Our members are editing professionals who want to raise awareness of what a motion-picture soundtrack is capable of doing to support the art of motion pictures," says MPSE president Bobbi Banks.

In the category of film, Avatar took out the Golden Reel Award for best music and sound effects in a feature film while Inglourious Basterds picked up the prize for best dialogue and ADR in a feature film. The Walt Disney film UP won for best sound effects, dialogue, ADR and music in a feature film animation while District 9 won the category for foreign feature film.

In the realm of television, Battlestar Galactica picked up the award for best long form dialogue, sound effects and ADR while True Blood collected the prize for best short form dialogue and ADR. The pilot episode of Glee won the category for best short form music in television and The Penguins of Madagascar was recognised for best sound effects, dialogue and music in television animation.

The MPSE also awarded film director Steven Spielberg with the ‘Filmmaker Recipient Award' while the ‘Career Achievement Recipient' was long-time MPSE member, Larry Singer.
