World’s First Student 3D Film

Filmink went along to watch a spooky short which was heralded as the first 3D production of its kind to be created by a student

"I'm not one of these people who think 3D is the only way forward but it's an exciting new technology with all sorts of things to do," director Dave Edwardz tells FILMINK. A recent graduate from the prestigious Australian Film Television & Radio School (AFTRS), Edwardz has directed what he claims to be the first student film in 3D, Dead Boring.

"I come from a visual effects background," says Edwardz, who originally studied animation at the Queensland College of Art and in 2007 completed an Australian Film Commission funded short entitled Burley! "I really appreciate doing things that are new and different. I thought 3D would be a very cool thing to explore at a place like AFTRS," he says.

Dead Boring focuses on the life of Dawn (Krew Boylan,) a lonely ghost who longs for someone to keep her company for years to come. Help comes in the form of eighties rocker Tommy Zeitgeist (Jeremy Lindsay Taylor), whose bike breaks down outside Dawn's house, leaving him stranded there with his girlfriend Jessica (Kate Bell).

After trespassing inside the house, the two are given a fright by Dawn, causing Tommy to topple down a staircase. Waking up as a ghost, Tommy is shocked to discover he was murdered simply to become a companion for Dawn. A brief argument ensues but Dawn is determined to get Tommy to be her "playmate." A series of comedic scenes unravel where the two ghosts bond, fall out, make up, and then fall out again.

The film's use of 3D is certainly effective. Carefully placed within the film, it ties in with the comedic narrative and set design. The 3D is used to emphasise the winding staircases, chandeliers and old décor of the house in which the film takes place and also serves the spooky twists and turns of the film's narrative. The quality of the experience is a credit to Edwardz and the rest of the cast and crew.

So how does this young filmmaker view the use of 3D in the future? "The exciting part of 3D is when it becomes accessible to everyone," Edwardz enthuses. "I think possibilities for music videos, commercials and experimental works would be great as well as for dramatic use. AFTRS is ramping up 3D production for future years so who knows what will come out?" he smiles.

Dead Boring is screening at the Helsinki International Film Festival in September
this year. Other film festivals are currently confirming its inclusion.
