Australia's circle of professional film critics recently announced the winners for the 2009 FCCA Awards for Australian Film.

The awards, divided into ten categories for Australian film, two subcategories for Documentary, and a further two separate awards for International releases - Best Foreign Language Film and Best Foreign Film in the English Language respectively - featured cinematic heavyweights that were released between January and December of 2009.

The FCCA, whose members represent individuals working as professional critics in South Australia, Western Australia, Victoria, the Australian Capital Territory, Queensland and New South Wales, cast their votes and made an official announcement of the winners belatedly, after unfortunately being unable to hold their usual gala due to sponsorship being impacted by the Global Financial Crisis.

Dominating many of the award spots was the Indigenous Australian drama Samson & Delilah, which landed Best Film, Best Director for Warwick Thornton (pictured) and Best Cinematography.

Similarly, the Robert Connolly's thriller Balibo scored two wins in Best Editing and Best Music Score. Actor Anthony LaPaglia received Best Actor for his role in the film as journalist Roger East.

Best Actress was awarded to Frances O'Connor for her role in Ana Kokkinos' Blessed. The three nominations for Best Actress in a Supporting Role were all from Beautiful Kate with the award given to Rachel Griffiths. Best Actor in a Supporting Role was also won by Beautiful Kate, with Bryan Brown winning the award.

Best Screenplay was snatched up by Disgrace, beating Best Film winner Samson & Delilah and Balibo.

In the Australian documentaries category, Best Feature Documentary was awarded to Contact by Martin Butler and Bentley Dean. The award for Best Short Documentary was shared by two films - Salt, directed by Michael Angus and Murray Fredericks, and Solo, directed by David Michod (Animal Kingdom) and Jennifer Peedom.

As for foreign releases, Best Foreign Language Film was won by Sweden's Let The Right One In. Best Foreign Film in the English Language was nabbed by Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds.
