The Avengers Smashes Box Office Records
The epic superhero team-up movie has registered as Australia’s second biggest opening film of all time.

Avenger fans, and those just after a cracking slice of blockbuster entertainment, packed cinemas around the country on ANZAC day to see the highly anticipated comic book movie - with the local box office taking a massive $6 million in its opening day.
The impressive result makes The Avengers the second highest grossing opener of all time, topped only by last year's Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, which took in $7 million. That said, the latter film opened on 730 screens (the highest number of all time). The Avengers opened around the country on 621 screens, the third highest number of opening screens.
The box office result represents the largest opening day in Australia of any Marvel Studios film, with this one day figure easily surpassing the combined individual opening day box office takings of each Marvel superhero film.
It also represents the best opening day for Disney Studios, beating The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe.
According to John Cracknell, senior vice president and managing director of Australia's The Walt Disney Company, the results can be largely attributed to Joss Whedon's screenplay and the stellar cast, which includes the likes of Robert Downey Jr., Mark Ruffalo and Aussie Chris Hemsworth. "The Avengers is testament to fabulous storytelling combined with a blockbuster cast and world-renowned director - this superhero epic is a must-see for all Australian fans and film lovers," Cracknell said.
