Continuing to smash records at the box office, Disney/Marvel's epic superhero team-up movie, The Avengers, has recorded the third biggest opening week in Australia ever, raking in $21,831,646. This result comes after the film posted the second biggest opening day results.

The Avengers is trailing Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, which sits at first spot, since claiming close to $30 million in its opening week last year. Just a smidgen in front of The Avengers in second place is Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince, which recorded just over $22 million.

Apart from Avatar, all the other films included on the Top Ten List of Highest Grossing Opening Weeks are franchise pics with instalments featured from The Lord of the Rings and Twilight, as well as Michael Bay's Transformers.

The Avengers is only being released in the US today where it's sure to do huge business.

Plus, just announced, another scene will be added to the film which should ensure major repeat business for the blockbuster.
