The superheroes are still smashing cinema records.

Close to two months since it was released in cinemas in Australia, Joss Whedon's The Avengers continues to make box office history with news in that the epic superhero flick has registered as our third highest-grossing title of all time having made $52,752,706.

Unsurprisingly, the two films it is trailing are both James Cameron flicks with Avatar sitting firmly in top spot having made a massive $115,577,297 at the local box office, while Titanic sits in second place having made $57,650,984. Both films have benefited from being re-released due to audience demand with Titanic 3-D playing again in cinemas earlier this year.

Given that The Avengers is still doing solid business at the box office, it looks like it could possibly surpass Titanic's uh, titanic box office result.

The film has just toppled the box office results of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2. Apart from Crocodile Dundee, all other films in the top ten list are franchise pics including Shrek 2, The Dark Knight and each of the instalments from the Lord of the Rings trilogy.
