Australian filmmaker, Kimble Rendall, has been handpicked to direct the high octane action thriller, Blowback, which will start production in Sydney next year.

And going by his credits (without mentioning that he was co-founder of iconic pop group The Hoodoo Gurus), Rendall seems to be the ideal man for the job. A leading action and visual effects director, Rendall is best known for directing sequences for such films as Ghost Rider, Killer Elite, iRobot and all three films in the Matrix franchise. Adding another genre film to his credits, the director recently wrapped the 3D Aussie shark thriller, Bait 3D, the long awaited follow-up to his feature debut, the horror misfire, Cut (2000).

Written by Australian action maestro Brian Trenchard-Smith (the man behind such cult classics as Turkey Shoot and The Man From Hong Kong), Blowback follows ex-Special Forces Op, David Craig, who takes his teenage daughter on a visit to Sydney. But when she's mistakenly abducted - simply by being in the wrong place at the wrong time - Craig is given just three days to get her back in once piece.

GFM Films are co-producing the project with Australian veteran producer Antony I. Ginnane - a major player in the Ozpolitation genre of the eighties - as part of a joint venture to develop, finance and produce the film, which has a reported budget of $25 million and a headline casting.

The experienced producer was thrilled to be backing the project. "It is incredibly exciting to be moving forward with Kimble on a film that will blend the iconic sights of Sydney with the adrenalin rush of Brian's action packed pages," Ginnane said.

Rendall added: "Over the last ten years I have been working for Hollywood studios on summer blockbusters. Tony sent me the Blowback script and here was an opportunity to work on a great action movie in my home town of Sydney.  For the first time showcasing this amazing city as the backdrop to a world class action thriller. Bring it on!"
