Kicking Up a Stir in King Street
A young local filmmaker is pushing artistic boundaries with a new claymation film about graffiti artists

Sydney youth, Luke Cavalan, has been busy creating his brand new claymation film Kaos in King St., a film that depicts the impact of the recently enacted anti-graffiti laws that state a person in possession of a spray can may be jailed for their art.
The film features well known graffiti artists such as Teazer, Pnash, Mystery and Phibs and is predicted to cause quite a stir in the Sydney graffiti circuit.
19 year-old Cavalan (or LC Beats) is a film graduate from the Australian Film Television and Radio School, and while admittedly young, has already completed a six minute short film called Mayhem in May Lane (2008). Also a claymation, this film follows three young urban hip-hop artists showcasing their art in the well known Sydney legal graffiti thoroughfare, May Lane.
Mayhem in May Lane challenged contemporary art and Cavalan's new larger-scale short can be expected to follow this trend. Kaos in King St. took a year to shoot, and features a 20-minute running time and the use of dialogue - a first for this young filmmaker.
The film also includes caricatures of pioneering Sydney graffiti artists, who Cavalan asked to create their signature work, but on a smaller scale.
"I've never done anything like this before," says graffiti artist, Phibs. "The whole process and the way it is put together is incredible. Seeing the finished result is very satisfying."
Kaos in King St. has already received sponsorship from 567 King Graffiti Art supply and Australian aerosol company Ironlak. It will be available on DVD in June 2010.
