‘Hugo’ Scores National Board of Review’s Top Gongs

Martin Scorsese’s ‘Hugo’ – a critical hit and bona fide crowd-pleaser – received the top nods at the National Board of Review’s Awards.

It hits cinemas here last weeks, but Martin Scorsese's Hugo earned the top gongs at the National Board of Review's annual awards, which were announced at the close of last year, taking home gongs for Best Picture and Best Director in a break from the more independently minded lists we've seen circulating...

The Descendants also left its mark with the NBR awarding George Clooney Best Actor alongside a Best Supporting Actress nod for newcomer Shailene Woodley and a Best Adapted Sceenplay win for Payne, Nat Faxon, and Jim Rash. The gong for Best Actress went to Tilda Swinton for her performance in the chilling We Need To Talk About Kevin.

In other categories, Breakthrough Performance Awards were given to both Felicity Jones for her love struck turn in Like Crazy, and Rooney Mara for her performance in David Fincher's adaptation of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.

As with every year, it's worth noting that the NBR is often off-base when it comes to picking the eventual Oscar winners (or even nominees!) and their choices widely vary from other critical bodies, notably the New York Film Critics Circle who announced their choices for the best films of last year around the same time.

The New York Film Critics Circle deemed the acclaimed silent film The Artist Best Film and also awarded it Best Director for the work of Michel Hazanavicius, Brad Pitt won Best Actor for his performances in Moneyball and The Tree of Life, and Meryl Streep unsurprisingly took home top honours for her work in The Iron Lady.

It's difficult to know which way to side this year where the leaders aren't as clear as 2010 (ahem, The King's Speech). It looks set to be a slightly unpredictable race. Bring on Oscar season...
