Golden Globe Nominees Announced

The nominations are in for the 2012 Golden Globes – the glitzy awards ceremony probably most notable for giving us a clue about who may be up for an Oscar...

In somewhat of a surprise, the acclaimed silent film The Artist (pictured) has been given the most nods at the 2012 Golden Globes. The romantic drama about Hollywood's transition from silent films to talkies in the 1920s garnered six nominations overall including Best Comedy or Musical.

Certainly after last year's somewhat woeful choice of nominees, which saw films including The Tourist and Burlesque up for top gongs, this year's Golden Globes appears to be taking a slightly more high-brow and less controversial approach to its picks. Although rest assured, Ricky Gervais (after claiming he wouldn't return) will be back as host to ruffle more feathers at next year's ceremony...

Racking up the second highest amounts of nominations after The Artist - with five nods each - is Alexander Payne's The Descendants starring George Clooney as a man struggling to keep his family intact and the civil rights drama, The Help, starring Emma Stone as an aspiring writer looking to tell the story of the African-American maids in her home town. Both films are up for the key category of Best Drama.

The other films nominated for the top award are Martin Scorsese's magical Hugo which has been garnering a swag of warm reviews, the Brad Pitt starring baseball drama Moneyball, Steven Spielberg's touching drama War Horse, and Clooney's political drama The Ides Of March.

Competing against The Artist in the category of Best Musical or Comedy is Woody Allen's nostalgic Midnight in Paris, the box office smash hit Bridesmaids, the drama/comedy 50/50 featuring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Seth Rogen, and My Week With Marilyn starring Michelle Williams as screen siren Marilyn Monroe.

Actors vying for the top nod include Clooney for his performance in The Descendants, Leonardo DiCaprio for his turn as FBI boss J. Edgar Hoover in J. Edgar, Brad Pitt in Moneyball and two of this year's most acclaimed stars - Michael Fassbender for his role as a sex addict in Shame and Ryan Gosling for his turn as a presidential campaign manager in The Ides Of March. (Gosling was also nominated for Best Actor in a Comedy or Musical comedic turn in Crazy, Stupid, Love).

And for the women, Meryl Streep seems to be leading the voting bets for her portrayal of former British PM Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady. But also nominated is Glenn Close for her performance as a woman masquerading as a male butler in Albert Nobbs, Tilda Swinton for her chilling turn in We Need to Talk About Kevin, newcomer Rooney Mara for The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, and Viola Davis as a maid in the box office hit The Help.

Vying for Best Director is Woody Allen (Midnight in Paris), George Clooney (Ides Of March), Michel Hazanavicius (The Artist), Alexander Payne (The Descendants) and Martin Scorsese (Hugo).

Foreign language film nominees are Pedro Almodovar's stunning but chilling new drama The Skin I Live In, Angelina Jolie's In The Land Of Blood And Honey, the Chinese movie The Flowers Of War, the Belgian film The Kid With A Bike, and Iran's morally complex A Separation.

On the television side of things, the nominees for Best Drama Series are American Horror Story, Boardwalk Empire, Boss, Game of Thrones and Homeland. And vying for Best Series, Musical or Comedy are Enlightened, Episodes, Glee, Modern Family, and New Girl.

The Best Mini-Series or Movie category sees Cinema Verite, Downton Abbey, The Hour, Mildred Pierce, and Too Big to Fail competing against one another.

The Golden Globes will be held on January 15, 2012. For the full list of nominees, go here.
