Avatar Record Breaking Spree

James Cameron’s epic certain to become highest box office earner of all time in Australia.

What took James Cameron's 1997 epic Titanic almost a year to accumulate at the Australian box office, his Avatar is ready to sink in just three weeks.

Since its release on December 17, Avatar is just $3 million shy of the staggering $57.6 million accumulated by Titanic. The film has moved to second place on the Australian Top 10 Films of all time, with a total of $54.9 million, edging out Shrek 2, Lord of the Rings: Return of the King and the only Australian film on the list, Crocodile Dundee.

With sold out screenings of regular and 3-D IMAX screenings around the country, coupled with the holidays and the sheer spectacle of Avatar, Cameron seems set to steamroll over his own record.

Rounding up the Top 10 box office money makers are Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring, The Dark Knight, Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, and both Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone and the 2009 Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince.

The sheer speed at which Avatar is looking to break the record indicates a few things: ticket prices have gone up substantially and 3-D charges punters even more than regular movies. Plus, currently playing on 590 screens (when the nearest rival is Twilight: New Moon on 315), Avatar has obviously been embraced by exhibitors in a big way.

Still, the speed at which Avatar has reached the record indicates that it will be a while before we see another movie come close to the popularity of James Cameron's imaginative and engrossing anti-army plea for the future of our planet.
