World Suicide Prevention Day

September 10th is World Suicide Prevention Day. In Australia, 65,000 Australians will attempt to take their own lives every year, of these attempts 2,200 Australians will die by suicide (this number is almost unanimously agreed to be a higher number by sector and mental health experts). Suicide is now the most likely cause of death for males under 44 years of age and 34 years of age for women.
World Suicide Prevention Day represents a day in which we can encourage others to get informed about the signs of suicidal behaviour, where they can get help, how they can get help and how to encourage responsible help seeking. Everyone can be affected by suicide and suicide does not discriminate.
There will be a special community forum hosted by ABC Four Corners' Quentin McDermott on September 10 at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney.
