Dick Smith Battles the Untold Dangers of Australia's Growing Population

August 25, 2010 13:22

Ovation Entertainment presents the critically acclaimed documentary, 'Dick Smith's Population Puzzle', now available to buy on DVD.

“This is the most important issue I have ever undertaken in my life,” says entrepreneur and philanthropist, Dick Smith, who like many Australians, had previously accepted the mantra that a big Australia, was a good Australia.

However, his attitude towards population growth suddenly changed after a phonecall from his daughter, Jenny. She wanted to know why nobody was talking about population in the lead up to the UN Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen. After all, wasn't it primarily people who create carbon emissions?

This revelation prompted Smith to realise a connection between Australia's record levels of population growth, and our ever-increasing congestion, property prices and hospital queues. “It's the elephant in the room, the hidden issue no one really wants to talk about, yet it effects every aspect of our Australian way of life, and we have to really start thinking about it and planning for the future,” says Smith.

'Population Puzzle' follows Smith as he embarks on a six-month journey throughout Australia and Bangladesh, exploring exactly how a rising population is changing Australia, and in particular, our quality of life. As revealed in the film, what he discovers comes as a shock.

'Dick Smith's Population Puzzle' is now available to purchase at all leading retailers and from the Ovation O-Shop: www.ovationshop.com.au
