Gallery For Justice Launch

August 25, 2010 10:17

The demise of traditional media has seen print magazines follow revenue raising celebrity gossip, leaving social justice stories to fall by the wayside.

As a result of frustrations with the lack of media attention for social justice issues photographer and SFS graduate Mark Tipple joined social entrepreneur Nikki James to form a non-profit organisation ‘Gallery for Justice’ which gives these issues the attention they deserve.

Through quarterly held photo exhibitions, ‘Gallery For Justice’ aims to bridge the gap between people with a mind for social justice and traditional print media becoming a hub for photographers and journalists to combine their work into the same image.

Gallery for Justice is a harmony of article and print, merging each into the same frame. ”We want to encourage conversation about the issues and the projects featured,” says Mark. “We’re aiming to provide a new platform to give these issues the attention they deserve, while empowering others to tell the story forward.”

With endorsement from The Salvation Army, the Gallery for Justice will launch on Saturday August 28 at Sticky Bar in Surry Hills, Sydney. The launch features Mark Tipple’s Indonesian Reportage 'Chasing the Jakartan Dream' which documents urban based poverty in Jakarta and the work of Roostien Ilyas, a social worker and founder of the National Commission for Child Protection in Jakarta and the Pelita Ilmu Foundation that supports activities for the families of people with HIV/AIDS.
