Oliver Stone's South of the Border to Premiere at Sydney Underground Film Festival

August 03, 2010 11:37

The Sydney Underground Film Festival has announced that it will kick off its 2010 festival with the Australian premiere of director Oliver Stone’s latest film SOUTH OF THE BORDER, with a screening presented by Time Out Sydney.

Oliver Stone’s controversial documentary, SOUTH OF THE BORDER follows Mr. Stone as he sets out on a road trip across five countries to explore the social and political movements and the mainstream media’s misperception of South America, including interviewing seven of its elected presidents.

The three-times Oscar® winning director has recently come under fire for statements made concerning his political views on both issues in South America as well as statements regarding the holocaust that were expressed in an interview with London’s Sunday Times. Mr Stone was forced to issue a statement explaining these comments and apologising for offence caused.

Sydney Underground Film Festival director Stefan Popescu said ‘We are excited to announce the Australian premiere of SOUTH OF THE BORDER. As an underground film festival, we promote critical thinking and discussion and sometimes this does mean addressing controversial topics. We feel that the Australian public should have a right to see these films and decide for themselves.’

The Sydney Underground Film Festival will run from September 9-11 at Sydney’s Factory Theatre.
