Genre is not a Dirty Word - Spy Films

AFTRS will run a course which kicks off July 18 about genre films with a focus on spy movies.
An examination of the spy film genre in all its incarnations from Fritz Lang's 'Spies' (1928) to 'From Paris with Love' (2010)
To introduce students to:
1 - The development of the spy movie from reflected realism of the pre and post-war years. (John Buchan's 'The 39 Steps') to the fantastical elements of the Bond series and the pop-art cycle that followed, to the spy as superhero cycle exemplified by 'True Lies', 'Mr and Mrs Smith' and 'The Bourne' series and 'Wanted'.
2 - The huge success of the Bond franchise and the film and TV copycats that followed ('Flint', 'Helm', 'UNCLE', etc).
3 - How Bond has adapted to changing trends (juxtapose both versions of 'Casino Royale').
4 - The heightened realism of the Bourne films, and how they have forever changed the language of action cinema.
