The Long-lost “Holy Grail” of Grindhouse Movies to be Unearthed at Cinema Nova
May 24, 2010 17:10
The film considered to be the "Holy Grail for lovers of B-Movies" - long-lost 1970s crime saga GONE WITH THE POPE – will screen for the very first time in Australia exclusively at Cinema Nova. Discovered and restored by Oscar-winner Bob Murawski (editor on 'The Hurt Locker'), the history of the film is as intriguing as the movie itself.
Remaining incomplete at the time of Mitchell's death, the film gathered dust in the director’s son’s garage for 30 years. But in the mid 1990s, fate intervened and successful Hollywood film editor Bob Murawski accidentally discovered this hidden gem of American underground cinema.
Now, fully restored by Bob and his company Grindhouse Releasing, this truly original film can finally be unleashed on a modern audience unfamiliar with the raw power of seventies underground cinema.
The film stars Mitchell as tough-guy Paul, recently released from prison, who is asked by members of the West-Coast Mafia to undertake a hit. Hoping to shake 'the life' once and for all so that he can settle down with his glamorous girlfriend, Paul accepts the offer with a plan to use the money to fund a far greater scheme: to travel to Rome and kidnap the Pope. The ransom: "A dollar from every Catholic in the world"!
Prepare to laugh, scream and be outright shocked with GONE WITH THE POPE - a film that was lost but has now been found in what could constitute an Act Of God – exclusively at Cinema Nova from June 17th.
