'Beneath Hill 60' Filmmakers Overwhelmed By Messages From Cinema Audiences
April 28, 2010 10:42
BENEATH HILL 60, the extraordinary true story of Oliver Woodward and his platoon of ordinary Australian miners who tunnelled beneath enemy lines and changed the course of the war on the Western Front, appears to be touching cinema audiences very deeply.
Members of the Australian public have inundated the filmmakers with well wishes and votes of thanks for bringing this remarkable story of the Australian tunnellers to light, with many sharing their own stories of ancestors and family members who were touched by war.
Screenwriter and Co-Producer David Roach said: “It’s been absolutely remarkable, really – and very humbling. It has taken us by surprise - these messages have come to us from Facebook, via emails and phone calls – people seem to have genuinely connected to this story and many want to make contact with us to share their own story. It’s been amazing to see the range of people who have made contact – from school kids to 80 year-olds. ”
The film performed strongly at the Australian box office on the Anzac Day long weekend – it was the only Top Ten entry that increased its box office on the corresponding period the previous week – BENEATH HILL 60’s box office increased by 42% while the other Top Ten movies dropped by percentages ranging from 14 to 39.
BENEATH HILL 60’s box office gross currently stands at $AUD1.7 million.
