A New Moon Overshadows Australian Politics As Generation 'Twi' Casts Its Vote
April 12, 2010 11:17
Young Australians have spoken out and declared that they are more interested in who is battling for the affections of the fictional characters in 'The Twilight Saga: New Moon' than who is battling for leadership of their State in the next election.
New research, released in conjunction with the launch of 'The Twilight Saga: New Moon' on Blu-ray and DVD, shows 78 per cent of Australians aged between 18 and 30 knew who Robert Pattinson’s character Edward Cullen was, while only 32 per cent knew the name of the leader of the opposition in their home State.
Similar numbers were seen when Gen Y was asked who the Governor General was (only 26 per cent were aware) and numbers plummeted when the 2010 Australian of the Year was addressed – only 5 per cent knew who Professor Patrick McGorry was compared to the 78 per cent who knew the vegetarian Cullen vampire.
Based on Stephenie Meyer’s phenomenally successful novel, 'The Twilight Saga: New Moon', which opened to a $16 million plus weekend at the Box Office – one of the highest EVER in Australia, is set to cause a stir among fans of all ages when it is released on Blu-ray and DVD this week.
The battle lines are drawn between those on Team Edward and those on Team Jacob, with a 49 / 51 per cent split between each camp.
'The Twilight Saga: New Moon' will be available from all major retailers across Australia from 14 April 2010.
