Cathy Henkel Honoured With Filmmaker Award At 2010 Byron Bay International Film Festival

March 09, 2010 14:45

When a Cathy Henkel film comes up in conversation, there is a general murmur of unified respect for a filmmaker whose work consistently manages to touch both our hearts and minds. Recognition of this has most recently come in the form of the ‘All Rounder’ Award presented to Cathy on the Opening Night of this year’s Byron Bay International Film Festival. This award acknowledges the standard of excellence of her work along with the substantial contribution she has made to the film industry in the north coast region.

The five documentary films she has directed, written and produced to date have illuminated Cathy’s determination to “look into the dark places and find hope”. They have also attracted instant recognition and international acclaim.

Her 2004 film ‘The Man Who Stole My Mother’s Face’ won Best Documentary award at the prestigious Tribeca Film Festival in New York City in that same year. Her most recent film ‘The Burning Season’ deals with Indonesian forest destruction and carbon credits and will receive the Rising Star Award for Excellence in Filmmaking at the 2010 Canada International Film Festival. This film was also recently nominated for an EMMY award in the category of Outstanding Documentary on a Business Topic.

Now working on her next feature documentary, there’s no doubt we’re going to be hearing a whole lot more from Cathy Henkel in the future.
