Nosferatu Restored And Rescored For Screen Live
March 08, 2010 11:44
Screen vampires are the new black. See where it all began with the very first vampire film ever made anywhere in the world.
A cornerstone of the horror genre, F.W. Murnau's Nosferatu has been triumphantly reborn in this breathtaking new restoration by the Murnau Foundation.
With unprecedented visual clarity and historical faithfulness to the original release, this iconic film will be rescored in the Playhouse for Screen Live on Sunday, April 18.
Accompanied by a new soundtrack composed by Sydney septet Darth Vegas, an extra layer of atmosphere will be added by the live sound effects of Doctor Death.
Still studied in tertiary film classes everywhere, Nosferatu is as visually stunning today as ever – the supreme example of German Expressionism.
Released in 1922, it was an unauthorised adaptation of Bram Stoker's Dracula. Max Schreck frighteningly portrays Count Orlok, a skeletal and inhuman rodent-like vampire who moves into town and leaves a trail of havoc and pestilence.
This beautiful and atmospheric horror film perfectly lends itself to the live music scoring of Darth Vegas, spearheaded by APRA Award-winning multi-instrumentalist Michael Lira.
The screening will be introduced by Jay Katz (Jaimie Leonarder) from The Mu Meson Archives who will put the film and the work of FW Murnau in their full cultural context.
The next Screen Live event will be New Pollutants’ take on Fritz Lang’s Metropolis on Sunday, May 2.
