The Australian Centre for the Moving Image presents Goemon

February 09, 2010 12:57

The Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI) will present an extended season of Kazuaki Kiriya's latest period drama Goemon (2009), from May 8-30. Goemon is being praised as a truly epic screen experience and visual feast as visionary director / writer / choreographer Kiriya offers his audience explosive CGI and live action-stunt work.

ACMI Head of Film Programs, Richard Sowada, knew as soon as he had seen Goemon that he had to bring it to ACMI. He remembers, "I first saw Goemon on the monster big screen at Cannes and literally walked out of the cinema shouting 'Yeah! Finally! What an absolute blast!...it's something so fresh and new."

The film is set in Japan in 1582 and the vast divide between rich and poor has led to great unrest. During an attempt to bring justice to the poor, Goemon inadvertently steals a mysterious box which the government is keen to keep a secret. Goemon soon finds himself pursued by highly skilled ninja assassins.

The film’s effects and design combine to create a fantastical technicolour world, mimicking the pages of comic books and frames of video games. CGI is utilised for 90% of the film enabling Kiriya to display some of the most multi-tiered and jaw-dropping Ninja battles ever committed to film.
