Transcultural Adoptees in Film
July 15, 2009 13:43
Transcultural Adoptee Films and Panel Event in Brisbane. ‘An Exploration & Celebration of Adoptee Perspectives.’
Sunday 26 July 2009
1pm – 2.30pm
Logan Entertainment Centre, Brisbane, Australia
Cost: $5 (included in entry fee to IAFQ’s ‘International Adoption Day’)
Audience: Open to all Teenagers to Adults interested in adoption.
As part of an inaugural national tour of films by or featuring transcultural adoptees the Intercountry Adoptee Support Network (ICASN) and Adopted Vietnamese International (AVI) are proud to present a special Transcultural Adoptee Films and Panel Event in Brisbane. The event is aimed at showcasing adoptees’ own perspectives on inter-country adoption, a practice made famous by celebrity adopters such as Madonna and ‘Brangelina’ but with the voices of adoptees usually left in their shadows.
Placing the focus firmly on adoptees’ perspectives, our event will include four short films made by or in collaboration with adoptees. The films are: ‘Row Your Boat’ by Jessica Emmett (UK, 2007), ‘The Girl in the Mirror’ by PARC featuring teen adoptees (Australia, 2006), ‘Mothers and Daughters’ by Marlene Oostryck with Sue Bylund (Australia, 2008) and ‘Running Dragon’ by Kim Noonan and Neal Sickles (USA, 2007). The film screenings shall be followed by a panel talk about themes in adoption by teenage and adult-aged adoptees from countries such as Ethiopia, Vietnam, Hong Kong and Korea. There will also be a special screening of the trailer of the newly released ‘Operation Babylift: The Lost Children of Vietnam’ by Tammy Nguyen (USA, 2009) in collaboration with various adopted Vietnamese Americans.
