The 2006 movie extra filmink awards

On FILMINK's night of nights celebrating the best and worst of the year in film the highlights rolled in thick and fast. Starting with the plush, luxurious surrounds of Sydney's grand State Theatre itself, the evening got off to a flying start with an hilarious short film courtesy of actor/director Abe Forsythe (the host of the first FILMINK Awards) and the tight, propulsive sounds of hip hop trio Bliss N Eso. Things then moved at a rattling pace (was this the fastest paced awards show ever?), as a host of presenters barreled across the stage: Pauly Shore made a few new friends (and maybe enemies), David Field was his usual cool self, Anh and Khoa Do brought a sense of family to proceedings, and Emily Barclay and Victoria Thaine proved why they're certified stars of tomorrow. The vocal dynamics of MC Thomas Bromhead kept the crowd giggling throughout the night, while show-stopping moments came courtesy of two icons of Australian cinema. Wolf Creek star John Jarratt delivered a moving speech on his acceptance of the inaugural Peter Finch Lifetime Achievement Award, while Russell Crowe was joined by his band The Ordinary Fear Of God for a heartfelt a capella tribute to his Gladiator co-star (and famed rabble rouser) Richard Harris. "I wrote it on a coaster," -  Crowe said, - "which meant that it had to be short." Short, but very, very sweet indeed. After Wolf Creek director Greg McLean had accepted his award for Best Australian Film, and Crash writer/director Paul Haggis had sent his thanks via a very funny pre-recorded message, Bliss N Eso once again took to the stage and closed the show in their own inimitable style. See you all next year!
