Short Term Memory
One of Australia’s most promising filmmakers, Ben Briand, debuts three new short films.

Inspired by photographer Lina Scheynius, music band Fantômas and the sensation of wind against bare ankles (?!), filmmaker Ben Briand is taking big leaps in the filmmaking world.
The 29 year old completed an Honours Degree in Fine Arts and was signed to Cherub Pictures, a successful commercials production company. He has now joined Mooonwalk Films in France.
Having won the Viewers' Choice Award at the inaugural MTV Optus ONE80 Project with Hammer Bay in 2007, and more recently co-directing a video clip for The Vines and advertisements for the likes of Westfield and Vicks, Ben Briand has now unveiled three new short films, Apricot, Castor and Pollux and Some Static Started.
Each film features beautifully crafted characters, presented through stunning visual fragments.
Apricot explores the theme of memory, intertwining an encounter between two apparent strangers and a girl's memory of her first kiss.
"Memory is a universal theme," says Briand. "It is the very definition of subjectivity, which to me is the most powerful thing in cinema."
Castor and Pollux is an eight minute poetic story of a girl in an apartment whose simple movements throughout the day give insight into her romantic relationship; and Some Static Started [pictured] is a film about a man who is recapping a vivid dream.
Although all three films touch on Briand's fave theme of memory, the filmmaker reckons that they have even more impact on their own. "I wasn't even conscious of the recurring motifs until I watched them back to back recently...I guess that is what comes from doing three films in a short amount of time."
Friends, crew and cast members gathered at the Chauvel Cinema at Paddington Town Hall in Sydney recently to see the films premiere, and Briand couldn't be happier with the strong response.
Briand is currently developing two longer projects that again have links with Apricot and Some Static Starter. The upcoming have been in development long before the three short films were created. However, Briand is excited to see what other up-and-coming Australian filmmakers are creating. "I am very interested in the new voice of Australian film directors that seem to be emerging. I look forward to seeing the change reveal itself soon."
